Guaitil Pottery

Guaitil is a small village located just outside Santa Cruz, the primary center of Costa Rican folklore. The residents of the town of Guaitil hold more than 5,000 years of traditions in pottery making. Beautiful works out of clay and extracted raw materials that are fired in giant wood-burning ovens using the same traditional techniques of their ancestors, the  Chorotega indigenous groups.

The  "Chorotegas" refer to a society that emigrated from Mexico to northern Costa Rica after 800 C.E, and which elaborated local art with Mesoamerican symbolism.
